The First Vision
Manassas Assembly Of God started with a humble vision to reach its surrounding community. In 1936 Rev. H.A. Salter led a small group to meet together in a theater on South Main Street in current Old Town Manassas. Pastor Salter invited evangelist L.K. Dodge to hold tent meetings in which several families gave their lives to Jesus. This began the community of Manassas Full Gospel Church.
The following year Manassas Full Gospel Church purchased property on Maple and Quarry streets to construct what became known as "the white framed church." Pastor Salter led this community in growth and maturity from 1937-1941. The building was renovated and the exterior was bricked in. A much needed Sunday school annex was also added.
The church was then guided by the leadership of Rev. R.H. Rupp (1941-1945), Rev. R.J. Hancock (1945-1957) who started a radio ministry, and Rev. Howard Spruill (1957-1969) who brought the church into affiliation with the Potomac District of the Assemblies of God. In 1961 a new sanctuary was built on the property and was completely paid for in a few short years. Soon after Manassas Full Gospel Church became known as Manassas Assembly of God.
Rev. Gordon Young (1969-1974) continued the trend of growth to the point that the facility was unable to accommodate the weekly attendance. In 1974 a five-acre parcel of land was purchased on Plantation Lane, and the vision began for a new facility to reach the surrounding community of Manassas.
The Next Phase
One month after the land purchase, then Associate Pastor, Rev. Vincent Beemer was elected to serve as Senior Pastor when Pastor Young accepted a pastoral position in another church. Pastor Beemer (1974-1987) broke ground in 1976 and the new facility at 8515 Plantation Lane was occupied in April 1978.
In 1987 Rev. Charles B. Nestor came to this vibrant church. The congregation entered into a time of unprecedented growth. On Easter Sunday 1997 the 10:30 a.m. service was moved to the gymnasium which had been converted into a sanctuary.
In 1998 the church "Embraced the Vision" for a new worship center that would soon become the largest worship facility in Northern Virginia.
New land was purchased, and on February 11, 2001, Manassas Assembly of God had its first service in their brand new facility.
During this time of growth the congregation was saddened to discover that Pastor Nestor was seriously ill with multiple sclerosis. In 2002 he announced his retirement from pastoral ministry.
A Look Ahead
In May 2002 Rev. Scott Leib was elected to serve as Senior Pastor. A Saturday night service and a Sunday evening young adult ministry joined the menu of outreach to a new and growing community. The congregation continues to grow and new phases of additions and expansions are currently being explored.
Pastor Scott continues to lead the focus of Manassas Assembly to its mission, helping people follow Jesus. The over-70-year legacy of Manassas Assembly to the Northern Virginia area continues to be one of commitment to God and compassion for its community. A return to our core values has stirred up a newly realized vision of growth and outreach for both here and across the world.
Who would have ever thought that a small group of fledgling believers would start a chain reaction of faith that would still be felt into the next millennium? Since that humble beginning in 1936, Manassas Assembly of God has grown in ways that could never have been imagined.
