What is Fasting?

“Is this not the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? . . . Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and He will say, “Here am I.”     Isaiah 58: 6, 9, TNIV

Fasting is abstaining from eating or other activities for a period of time. Fasting is an outward expression of an inward commitment to turn away from selfish desires to pursue the desires of God. It can take various forms and last different lengths of time. Christian fasting is always combined with prayer.

What is the point of Fasting?

- Fasting is a concrete way to offer God a sacrifice of praise.
- Fasting is a way to intensify your ability to pray.
- Fasting helps you focus and hear from God more clearly.
- Fasting is a spiritual discipline: it helps us grow in our faith.
- Fasting is a very tangible way to deny ourselves—to declare before God that we know it's all about Him, not about us. Jesus said, "Whoever wants to follow me must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me."
- Jesus fasted (Matthew 4:1-4). We follow Jesus

Prayer and Fasting Sermon by Rev. Peter Joudry

Pray like This:

“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? . . . So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask Him.”  -Matthew 7:7-9, 11,NLT

- Pray in faith. Trust God for His answers to your prayers.
- Pray according to God’s will.
- Confess your sins to God.  Ask Him to bring your sins to mind so you can ask for forgiveness and help in living the kind of life He wants you to live.
- Pray His word. Look for His promises in the Bible.
- Pray with thanksgiving for what God has already done.
- Pray in the Spirit, listening for His leading and obeying His prompting.
- When you’re praying with others, listen to what they’re praying and agree with them. Add to their prayer as it feels right to you.
- Pray in Jesus’ name. You have authority through Him!
